P a g e | 54 But here is the thing. Airports are essentially pretty large cities unto themselves. They have many large buildings as well as a massive amount of pavement and parking infrastructure. Airports handle very large passenger car and truck loads. Aircraft also spends much time on the ground, often idling. What most of these airport emission sources ( Figure 28 ) have in common is that they use pavements. It may surprise some that airport traffic and aircraft on the ground contribute over 60% of airport emissions. Herein is the opportunity for the paving industry to capitalize on climate initiatives at airports, especially use phase strategies, we will soon discuss, that can achieve offsets airport authorities will never accomplish in the terminal or in the air.
