P a g e | 15 Mobile-Sourced Emissions are the Transportation Sector’s Primary Scope 3 Emissions Unlike scopes 1 and 2, quantifying Scope 3 emissions is not historically required for most reporting and disclosure. While this may have served to simplify the process in the past, by omitting Scope 3 emissions, subsectors “paint” an incomplete view of their total carbon footprint , of course. An oversimplification that carbon accounting and lifecycle emissions measurement will not factor out. Because it is such a broad category, Scope 3 emission sources often make up the majority of an organization or subsector’s GHG emissions. But they also typically offer the greatest opportunities for emissions reductions as we will be discussing in this report. Our world is rapidly moving from emissions inventory reporting to accountability. No firm and no sector will be immune.
